Onion Eating Contest

Bravo to our 2021 Winner: Mike Stubeck

The Pine Island Chamber of Commerce hosted its Annual Onion Eating Contest on Sunday, September 5th at the Polish Legion of American Veterans Pavilion at 5 pm.

Orange County legislator and local farmer, Paul Ruszkiewicz, emceed the contest for the organizer, Alex Kocot, who was one of the competitors. A large crowd cheered on their favorites as Mike Stubeck, new to the competition, won in a really tight bite to the finish.

Warwick Town Supervisor, Michael Sweeton and Warwick Town Council Candidate, Kevin Shuback were among the contestants. Onlookers included a number of local officials: Warwick Town Councilman, running for reelection, Floyd DeAngelo; Warwick Town Justices, Nancy DeAngelo and Peter Barlet; Assemblyman, Karl Brabanec and Senator Mike Martucci.

This event was sponsored and conducted by the Orange County Vegetable Growers Association, and took place during the Annual Onion Festival produced by 18-time grammy winner Jimmy Sturr and his Orchestra. The winner received a check for $100 from the Orange County Vegetable Growers Association, and a plaque sponsored by the Orange County Farm Bureau.

In a grand charitable, community gesture, Mike Stubeck donated his winning prize money to the Polish Legion of American Veterans. A wonderful day was enjoyed by all who attended.

About The Pine Island Onion Eating Contest

The Pine Island Chamber of Commerce holds an annual Pine Island Onion Eating Contest at the Polish Legion of American Veterans Pavilion. The contest is in celebration of Pine Island’s 3,000 acres of hearty onions that are famous throughout America.

The winner receives a check for $100 from the Orange County Vegetable Growers Association and a plaque sponsored by the Orange County Farm Bureau. Registration is limited to 12 contestants and pre-registration is required. Want to be a contestant?  To register, call Russell Kowal at (845)258-4792.
